–Few references provide detailed information about the candidate. There are two reasons for this: Because of strict confidentiality clauses imposed by their companies, references cannot easily disclose pertinent information about their past subordinate. The second reason is that references may likely be personal friends with the potential candidate that you are hiring.
–Reference information given on the wrong person – In Fortune 500 companies, there is the likely possibility that past employees have the same names so information provided over the phone by the references may be on the wrong person.
-Historical setting may not align with current conditions – Some reference checking points may not be applicable with the different job atmosphere of the new company the candidate is to be hired. Thus, there may be negative qualities in the working environment the candidate has generated from his past employer but he or she does not necessarily carry over to his new employer.
- –Knowledge of the applicant is inadequate. Some references honestly don’t know well about their past subordinate. These persons cannot provide accurate description of the candidate applying.
- –Records are not relied on. Some references’ knowledge on their previous subordinates is limited only with the records that they have on site.
