The importance of internal communication could never be stressed more in today’s business environment. It is not the big that eats the small but the fast that beats the slow. Fast organizations are fast because it is efficient in passing information up and down the organization. They are more flexible, able to navigate blunders better, and are more adept to changes. They recuperate from failures fast and are better in applying learning from previous mistakes. Improving on internal communication must be an organizational habit; it must be learned and improved over time. Organizations have learned to hone their internal communication processes simply because they need it to maintain competitive advantage. Those that downplayed this element are left to cope up with numerous problems inherent in uncoordinated organizations.
Perhaps one of the most important reasons why internal communication should exist in an organization is to break corporate entropy. What is corporate entropy? Corporate think tanks have been rallying this thought for a long time, arguing that as the organization grows its efficiency ratio also decreases simply because of communication problems. Directives and feedback is compromised to and fro the organization’s chain of command because the channel of communication is unrefined and clumsy at best. Internal communication solves this issue by putting importance on the need of developing solid channels of communication as the organization grows. Size was seen as a burden before as far as communication and control is concerned. Today some large organizations are showing better performance in passing on messages up and down the line compared to small organizations falsifying the notion that size merits communication difficulty.
The Inside-out principle
The importance of internal communication could never be explained better than the inside-out principle. You simply cannot communicate well to external customers if you do not have an honest and timely communication with your internal customers – employees, investors, business partners, and even association members. If you cannot keep it clear inside, you simply cannot eloquently express what you are to the audience that matters most to you – the buyers of your products and services. Do you want to grow and be perceived by your customers as their number one choice? Talk inside the walls of your organization first. Positive customer perception will naturally follow.
Effective internal communication can also boost morale. People at work are well informed and are openly invited inside decision making processes. This creates an environment of trust and transparency and can only positively impact organizational culture. The company is also protected from risks of branding corruption as it seeks to get everyone involved on its business activities. By letting people know what is going on and are given freedom to talk back what they think about this direction, the organization strengthens the pillars of its corporate identity. With sound leadership, solid goals, and clear communication lines, moral can be kept high even in the most trying of times.
Internal communication and change
When an organization has effective internal communication it is able to handle change better. Transitions are easy and adjustment down times are minimized. When an organization is optimally connected it gets rid of confusion and address doubts as soon as it surfaces. Because internal communication tools are maximized everyone is in the loop and change is effected seamlessly.
