Common body language and gestures and their meanings
Consistent eye contact can mean honesty (or forced honesty), interest, and engagement. It all depends on how the eyes express themselves (widened eyes, dilated pupil, brow flash, eye rubbing, and frequent blinking, etc.). The mouth can also be a rich source of body language. A pasted or dropped jaw smile can mean the smile is faked. Lip biting, chewing a gum, and nail biting can mean tension and nervousness. Crossed arms can mean holding back. When a folded arm is complemented with a crossed leg it means being defensive. A slouched posture can mean lack of confidence. Excessive hand gestures can mean nervousness. The way a person move around someone he is engaged to can also have different meanings.
This personal space element is important in gauging a person’s comfort level around people and his willingness to engage them. Natural leaders are very good in handling personal spaces. That is why they are able to solicit comfort, trust, and confidence from the people they are leading.
