To know more about your applicant before he or she is going to be hired, you need to have some comprehensive across-the-board kind of references. The ideal number of references is 6 to 8. They should consist of the former direct supervisor who is still connected to the company, a representative from the recruiter, colleagues within the same unit, subordinates and even clients and suppliers who have direct contact with the person throughout his or her employment with the previous company.
It’s good to have some extra references saved up on your computer as well to have backups in case your current ones are unavailable or to have more relevant references for a specific job. Most recent references are preferred.
That is what is called as 360 reference checking. Everything is checked out, from superiors to even subordinates and even third party persons outside the company like clients directly involved in dealing with the person. Even suppliers or government regulators who may have contacted the person in his official capacity with the company can be involved. So everything must be done professionally.
Online Reference checking must be devoid of personal biases.
What are your thoughts about the 360 reference checking? Do you think it’s effective?
