Why employee engagement is necessary
The benefits of employee engagement were highlighted as the global economy slumped within a very short period of time. Organizations scrambled to keep their boats afloat in the sea of layoffs and closed divisions. But perhaps the most difficult part of this crisis-mode transition is willing people to carry extra weight on their jobs just to keep the organization floating. To make it more challenging, organizations must keep the competitive advantage in the midst of a shrinking business with dozens of competitors as desperate to be the sole survivor. Employee engagement is at the very center of putting people in into that adrenaline high, delivering above and beyond what is expected from them and keeping at that level of productivity in prolonged periods of time.
What is employee engagement?
Employee engagement can be defined in so many ways. Many people would argue that it is pushing organizational culture to the front using that as a rally point for numerous motivational programs. Some would say it is all about more visible and engaged leaders. Others would even see it as a massive effort of clearing out corporate direction from the top down to the line of the organization. Employee engagement in a nutshell means getting people more into the “program” of the organization. If in the past it is okay to not understand the goals of the organization (think VMV), now living by it every day is necessary. It means informing people to what the organization does, how it plans to achieve its goals, and what that all means to the individual employee.
Positivity in the workplace
Sun Tzu once cited the importance of desperate ground. Desperate ground in an organizational sense is a time when there is a do-or-die situation. The odds are against the company. The blunders ahead seem so insurmountable. Wise generals use desperate ground to rouse that last straw of strength from the men, from employees. Employee engagement makes invoking desperate ground in the workplace possible. When people understand the dire situation, they pull more than their own weight. They are more interdependent and allow the organization to push through in the most desperate of times. This fosters in positivity in the workplace. When in the past there is no hope, with employee engagement, the reverse is possible. Belief that something can be done is so strong that it gets the organization rolling to the right direction.
Innovation at the workplace
Employee engagement clears out expectations. People at work do not only realize they need to do something. It also gives them a clear look of the spaces they can fill, enabling then to contribute in ways the organization wants them to. Innovation flows naturally, work processes are improved effortlessly, efficiency increases, and productivity taken to new heights. Employee engagement does not only provide for motivated people, it also gives them avenue where to put that motivation into good use.
Pride at work
Employee engagement means well-informed people at work. This gives them a heightened sense of belongingness and better awareness of what the organization does and why it is good at what it does. This instills corporate pride and leaks out to the many facets of the organization’s operation. More external customers are won and employees become brand evangelists overnight. They simply cannot stop talking about the organization they work for and why they believe it is the best in the industry.
