Unlocking creativity at work with humor and fun!
The importance of creating a fun work environment goes beyond feeling loose and comfortable at the office. It also has something to do with productivity. That is why organizations must be keen in integrating this into their corporate culture. Bryan White said, “we really never grow old we just learn how to act in public”. This is actually true in the corporate world. Studies in corporate psychology have revealed that fun in the workplace can be actually good. It relaxes people and makes the work environment tolerable. So why do organizations need to embrace a fun work environment?
It stimulates creativity
There is a reason why tech companies that are making computer games have more relaxing work spaces. There are no cubicles, lots of color on the walls, no uniforms, and no restrictions on what one can do just to have fun. This kind of workplace loosens people and let them wander creatively. It allows ideation to flow easily. There is a lot to learn from these companies. It simply proves that a fun environment at work unlocks the creative genius of people.
It connects people, not their functions
Sometimes people work like robots and they connect in an unnatural way, making them prone to conflict, especially in crunch time when stress at work is at its peak. When the workplace has an element of fun however, people connect with people, making professional relationships lighter. This often achieves things faster plus communication is easy and very natural. This does not mean of course that professional limits are removed (that can present a whole lot of other problems too). It just means there is a better level of connecting with people at work, and it is not black and white “head of accountancy department” to the “manager of the human resources department”.
Happy people simply work better and faster. Fun in the workplace breeds positive vibes and positive vibes make the body poised to perform better. A fun workspace removes dull moments, boredom, and sometimes tension. All of these can unlock the inclination of people to do more and sustain that productive pace as long as they can (as long as it is fun). What you get is a highly productive people doing their jobs better all because of that simple fun element.
A good way to engage people
Leaders just have to love a fun environment. In fact a research by Hodge-Cronin and Associates reveal that out of the 700 plus CEOs they interviewed, 98% prefer job candidates that have a sense of humor. Fun and humor is a good way to engage people into real conversations. Leaders who are having a hard time reaching out to their team should try humor to break the ice. This can unlock people, make them more comfortable, and get them talking in an un-pressured way.
A fun work environment gets people morale up in longer periods of time. They come to work ready and excited. Morale is elevated simply because work is equivalent to fun. This foreknowledge on what to expect at the office builds up the right attitude towards work and ultimately towards the organization. Absenteeism rates will go down, tardiness will be minimized, and turnover rates managed better.
