Questions asked during a reference checking are very good and important indicators to know if you are on your way of finding a good hire.
Reference checking is more than background checking. Background checking confirms the educational background of the applicant as well as his or her inclusive dates of employment. Meanwhile, you can know about the character of the person in reference checking. The following are questions you need to ask yourself;
1-What were the candidate’s dates of employment, title and role?
By doing this, you can already know whether the applicant can be trusted through telling the truth in the resume that he or she submitted.
2-Is the candidate recommended for rehire by the reference? Why or why not?
3-What was the reason for the person leaving?
Pay close attention to the reference’s answer to this question. This will be very helpful information for making your hiring decision by giving you good insight of the candidate’s work ethics.
4-Was he or she ever promoted? Determine the candidate’s advancement in his or her previous employers. If the answer is positive, it means the person can be a company asset.
5-Did the subject applicant receive salary increases?
6-Did the applicant/candidate complete his or her duties and responsibilities in his/her previous employer? Did he or she go above and beyond what was required of the job? If the answer is yes, then the person is a company asset.
7-What were the candidate’s strengths as an employee? Is he or she a hard worker?
8-Was the employee perpetually punctual during the inclusive dates of employment?
9-Did the employee get along well with his or her peers? Superiors? Clients?
Remember that there are five references to be checked so you’d get a pretty good picture on the character of an applicant. Thus, reference checking is thorough indeed.
