Traditionally, hiring talent outside of their immediate area was a challenge for most companies. A lot of time and money was spent on travel in order to confidently ensure a candidate would be the right fit. Fast-forward to 2015, and advancements in HR technology, such as video interviewing, have changed the game. It is now easier than ever for companies of all sizes to expand the reach of their candidate pool, without wasting time and money on travel.
Have we reached the point that we can confidently hire someone without meeting them in person?
With VidCruiter, the answer is yes. By utilizing our platform, we have hired a number of employees without meeting them in person. With the entire Applicant Hiring System, we have been able to hire for a variety of positions, including remote workers and those that were looking to relocate. Here is one example of how we combined the platform’s various tools to ensure we made a quality hire without meeting the candidate in person:
An applicant’s location or time zone is irrelevant for the initial phase of our recruitment process as the steps are completed asynchronously. The positions were posted in a variety of ways and candidates submitted their application into our applicant tracking system. A variety of filtering and weighted questions eliminated unqualified applicants and later helped our hiring team determine the leading candidates. Candidates that passed the minimum requirements were automatically invited to complete a pre-recorded video interview a few days later. Upon completion of their video interview candidates were also invited to submit their references via our automated reference check tool. Due to the platform’s automation ability, we were able to collect all of this information without any member of our team having to spend a second with any applicant.
Our team began their review of the qualified applicants and determined which individuals would be invited to participate in the next round. The ability to sort and rank applicants based on the initial phase of the recruitment process allowed our team to quickly identify the leading candidates. The short-listed candidates were invited to participate in a live video interview with a few members of our hiring team. The live video interview allowed our hiring team to interact easily with each candidate as if they were meeting them in person.
In this particular case, the finalists were going to be invited for an in-person interview. Although two of the finalists were nearby the position’s location, one of the finalists was looking to move across the country but was was still living over 4100 km (2500 miles) away. Instead of spending over a thousand dollars to fly the one candidate in for an in-person meeting we elected to conduct his final interview via another live video interview. The platform’s flexibility allowed us to conduct both the live video interview and the two in-person interviews in a nearly identical manner. Our rating system was customized to match both interview scenarios, allowing us to objectively compare all three finalists.
Despite the fact that we had yet to meet the relocating candidate in person, the information collected throughout recruitment process made our hiring team confident that he was the right hire. With the platform’s onboarding capabilities, a number of the necessary documents were even filled out and digitally signed before the new hire arrived.
With the VidCruiter platform, our hiring team has all the necessary tools to make quality hiring decisions without meeting all applicants or even finalists in person. The benefits of an expanded candidate pool are even more favorable when you can reduce or even eliminate the traditionally required travel costs. Although it isn’t needed for every position, the ability to confidently make a hire without meeting a candidate in person is something that can benefit a majority of organizations.
